David de Alba as Boy-Chic
Review by Micheline Cook
Mr. de Alba's 9th CD release is a smashing, delightful trip down memory lane. One can almost visualize a stately diva in a virtual cabaret of the '40s or '50s, giving her all to an enraptured audience. The vibrant but silken voice starts out with the famous "Guantanamera", and just gets better and better as the song parade goes on!
Most of the CD songs are in Spanish and Latin music lovers will be enthralled with the excellent selection of "evergreens". "Amor" is an outstanding rendition of softness and caresses (in sharp contrast to some modern versions), followed by an Armando Manzanero Medley, which will definitely thrill his followers. The party continues with the lively "Quando Quando" (Italian song made popular by Michael Bublé). From that point on, an incredible deluge of lovely old tunes follows.
"Solamente Un Vez", "Muñequita Linda", "Historia de Un Amor", "Bésame Mucho", and others adorn this most incredible bouquet of Latin songs that actually served as milestones in the lives of hundreds of thousands Latinos throughout the world during the '40s, '50s and '60s. But if one thinks that David de Alba only excels at delivering his native music, then I must inform the reader that the best selections in the CD are Judy Garland's "Just in Time", [ Ella Fitzgerald's] "Summertime", and "The Man I Love". The interpretations are flawless and Mr. de Alba's voice is in top form and style!
To complete this formidable CD's American repertoire, Mr. de Alba peppers it up with Cole Porter's "It's DeLovely"........and two Bonus Tracks: A different arrangement of the Manzanero Medley, and "Smile" (a cappella) which distinctly demonstrates David's ability as an accomplished vocalist. Actually, David can sing anything and still thrill anyone. And speaking of the Bonus Tracks, this CD is almost like two CDs for the price of one; it has 25 songs!
The arrangements by former concert pianist Linda La Blanche are a perfect frame to showcase one of the best Female Illusionist's voices today. This is very definitely a true collector's item.......a must have for not just FI collectors but also for all Latin music lovers! Bravo, David!
David de Alba's "Songs Worth Remembering" is his best work yet. Every song has his very own personal touch and you feel as if you are sitting right in front of him as he sings every song with his own unique style and flair. This CD is "Worth Remembering". Great Show!
David de Alba’s “Songs Worth Remembering” is a lovely trip down memory lane in both North and South America of the 1950s. This bilingual CD offers an excellent selection of beautiful and popular songs in both continents that have endured the passage of time and remain evergreens in our culture.
Though most of these songs have been recorded many times before, Mr. de Alba’s excellent renditions in both voice quality and interpretation overshadow most of them. As a premier female illusionist, his Judy Garland’s “Just in Time” and “The Man I love” are flawless faithful renditions of the original icon. His Latin songs are fully packed with that “Latin fire” reminiscent of Chorens and Guillot during the 50s and 60s.
There is just so much to enjoy in David’s newest production…and how can we go wrong when we are getting 25 songs for the price on one CD!
'Cuanto lo Siento' is done fabulously by you David along with the very good musical arrangement. I feel these type of songs that catches your throat in the raw you do them quite well. These strong tragic styled boleros, along with your vocal approach on them, and your strong body gestures add to the interpretation.
